A total hip replacement, also known as total hip arthroplasty, involves the removal of the diseased bone and cartilage and its replacement with artificial parts. A metal stem is inserted into the hollow middle of the femur to replace the broken femoral head. The femoral stem can be "pressed fit" or glued into the bone. On the top of the stem is inserted a metal or ceramic ball. The injured femoral head that was removed is replaced by this ball. A metal socket is used to replace the acetabulum, the socket's injured cartilage surface. The socket may occasionally be secured in place with screws or cement. You, your family, your primary care physician, and your orthopedic surgeon should all work together to decide if you should have hip replacement surgery. Your doctor would normally recommend you to an orthopedic surgeon for a preliminary assessment before making this choice.
