The damaged bone and cartilage are removed during a total hip replacement, sometimes referred to as a total hip arthroplasty, and are replaced with artificial components. To fix the shattered femoral head, a metal stem is placed into the hollow center of the femur. A "pressed fit" or adhesive can be used to attach the femoral stem to the bone. A metal or ceramic ball is put on top of the stem. This ball is used to replace the injured femoral head that was removed. The acetabulum, the damaged cartilage surface of the socket, is replaced with a metal socket. On rare occasions, screws or cement may be used to anchor the socket. To determine if you need an orthopedic surgeon, you, your family, your primary care physician, and all of these parties should consult together.
